The average gas tank size for cars is 12 gallons, according to Quicken Loans. Larger cars hold up to 16 gallons, and the smallest tanks are around 9 gallons. Specific fuel-tank sizes are often listed in owner’s manuals and maufacturer websites.

In 2011, the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry had 18.5-gallon tanks, whereas the Toyota Prius featured an 11.9-gallon tank. Larger gas tanks don’t need to be refilled as often, depending on usage and miles driven. Car review websites, such as Edmunds.com and Cars.com, offer ways to compare vehicle tank sizes. Larger vehicles, such as SUVs and minivans, have larger fuel tanks, and electric vehicles do not have fuel tanks.
